The clothing sector comprises a relatively well-defined group of companies which produce a variety of clothes from both synthetic and natural fibres.

To create an internationally competitive industry that expands its volume of exports to both new and established markets.
Production Capacity
The clothing sector employs approximately 150 000 people in 1 600 formal clothing manufacturers and accounts for 3% of total manufacturing production. The industry is concentrated in the provinces of Kwazulu-Natal and the Western Cape. The clothing industry has a relative cost advantage when the cost of its inputs(textiles) is removed.
Imports
Clothing imports declined by 12,6% in the first semester of 1997, compared to the first semester of 1996. This represents 0,5% of total manufactured imports.
The top seven countries of origin of imported manufactured clothing for the first semester of 1997 were: (in order of descending volumes) 1) China 2) Malawi 3) India 4) Hong Kong 5) Italy 6) USA 7) Germany.
Exports
Clothing exports increased by 44,7% in the first semester of 1997, compared to the first semester of 1996. This represents 0,8% of total manufactured exports.
The top seven export destinations for South African manufactured clothing for the first semester of 1997 were: (in order of descending volumes) 1) Mozambique 2) UK 3) USA 4) Netherlands 5) Germany 6) Zambia 7) United Arab Emirates.
