 Tourist Visa Requirements

While the Government of South Africa endeavours to welcome and encourage foreign tourists to its shores it also fights a continuous battle against illegal migrants in the country. Due to South Africa's large base of labour, it does not undertake special drives to attract foreign workers into the country. Its primary aim is to create employment opportunities for all its citizens.

South Africa is represented by the High Commission in New Delhi and the Consulate General in Mumbai. Both offices are authorized to process visa applications.

The following is a summary of the requirements and conditions set out by the Department of Home Affairs as directed by the Immigration Act. This only applies to the tourist category:

A. Individual Tourists
 • A valid passport (i.e. 6 months validity)
 • A duly filled visa application form
 • Proof of confirmed flight bookings
 • Proof of hotel accommodation in South Africa
 • A "No objection" letter from employer
 • Foreign exchange
 • Funding for the trip/salary advice/bank statements
 • Copy of tour itinerary
 • If hosted by a South African national, a declaration to that effect

B. Tour Groups
All of the above plus
 • Each member of the group must apply for a visa
 • A copy of the itinerary
 • A list of persons on the tour
 • Letter of guarantee from the organising tour operator

C. Notes
1Visas are not issued on arrival in South Africa.
2Visas to Indian passport holders are issued free of charge.
3Applicants must demonstrate their intent to return to their own country.
4A minimum of three (3) working days are required for visa processing.
5Applicants may be requested to lodge a refundable deposit.
6Visitors to South Africa must have medical insurance as foreigners are not treated free of charge and medical treatment can be very expensive in South Africa.
7Under no circumstances are foreigners permitted to change the purpose of their visit to South Africa.
8Visas are not endorsed on passports with extension pages.
9A South African visa does not specify the duration of your stay. This is done at the port of entry. However, a visa specifies the period for reporting to a port of entry.
10All applications for extension of visas in South Africa are subject to a fee of 270 rands (US$45) per application, regardless of whether it is granted or not.
11The processing time frame for an extension in South Africa is 3-6 weeks.
12Visitors' visas for holiday purposes do not allow engagement in business activities.
13Yellow Fever immunisation is required only if your journey starts or entails passing through a Yellow fever belt of Africa or South America.
